The Herb Farm

Any thoughts or opinions about the Herb Farm or the Barking Frog?

Re: The Herb Farm

I enjoyed both but they are different. If you want choice its the
Barking Frog. They are also part of the $25 for three courses thing (at
least for another week).

I found the Herb Farm lacking. Maybe I'm the only one. But here's why: the
food is good, but they PACK you in there, and you have to listen to their
dog & pony about the evening's menu for what must be ten minutes. The spiel
is laced with references to the gift shop and availability of autographed
copies of the cookbook. I'll take Rover's anytime.

Re: The Herb Farm

Packed in? They give more table room than any restaurant in the area and
the tables are not close enough to hear a neighboring conversation. The
dog/pony show and herb sniffing can get precious. But this place is much
better than Rovers.

Re: The Herb Farm

I've often wondered about the Herbfarm. Really my budget is more suited
for places running the $25 for 25, but with a milestone birthday this
year I seriously considered it.
My concerns? 1 Price. I mean, I think I'd rather try Mistral at that
price instead.
2. Feeling comfortable. I remember going to Fandango and feeling out of
place (it wasnt dress it was age/lifestyle) and I can only imagine what
the herbfarm would be like.
The dog and pony show doesnt appeal.

But I'm asking, is it worth the money?

I don't like to pay a lot of money for dinner. But I actually thought
the Herbfarm was worth it for very special occasions. I think it was
a 5 hour deal; before I went I wondered what we would do for 5 hours!
But the time went quickly and enjoyably.

Many courses (9?) and a different wine for each. I didn't think of it
as a dog and pony show, as much as an educational experience. It was
fancy, what with all the difference glassware and decorations, but I
felt the owners were some ex-hippies that like to eat and drink
well. I never felt out of place.

Check out their web site.

Bummer for those who don't drink wine or other spirits - seems like we'd
be paying for something not consumed? Do they have a non-wine drinker
discount?

"Non-drinkers, we also have interesting non-alcoholic options paired to each
course." from the ugly url

That makes it sound like you aren't going to be drinking coke...

I think you answered your own question. How can you possibly enjoy the meal,
which is expensive, when you talk as you do? Just set the thought aside and
choose a place that accepts you as you are, and enjoy.

Re: The Herb Farm

I've been to Mistral and prefer the Herbfarm. The wines are better.
Better mix of ages though it is skewed towards older. Lifestyle wasnt an
issue since other tables didnt really impinge on the bubble that the
table inhabited. Physically, it was more comfortable.

Worth the money? Difficult to say. Not sure any restaurant is worth that
amount. For that amount I'd prefer something totally different -
something like Arun's in Chicago which is a Thai version of the Herbfarm
or Tojo's in Vancouver. The Herbfarm gave a feeling for how the
Victorians lived - service, long meal, fine wines. An upscale version of
those places that make you eat with your fingers and watch jousting. If
BA was running one of their specials to London/Paris I'd probably prefer
to go there for about the same cost.

Heh. Last January, Herself and I cashed in UAL Mileage Plus points to
fly to IAD. We drove out to Washington, VA, to stay at the Inn at
Little Washington. Worth the money? Well, it made the birthday girl
exquisitely happy on a milestone occasion, so I'd have to say yeah.
The place is seriously, seriously good.

Personally, I'm a water drinker and you'd be hard pressed to find a
glass of water that would be equivalent in price to a glass of wine.
Guess I'll have to give them a call to see what carb-free options they
have or if they give a discount for those of us who are water drinkers
